Description

Avala is a mountain 15km away from the city center and is one of the favorite resorts of Belgrade. It is 511 m high (Zrnov peak) and it rises about 200 m above the surrounding undulating terrain. Special attraction is the Avalski TV Tower built in 1965, which was demolished in the NATO bombing in 1999. The tower was the largest building in former Yugoslavia. It was rebuilt on April 21, 2010 and it looks almost identical as the original is only 1 meter higher. The Avala Tower has 38 floors, which can be reached by 2 elevators. At a height of 119 m there is a restaurant while the viewpoint is at a height of 122 m. The total height of the Avala Tower is 205 m. Access to Avala tower is also enabled for people with disabilities. The tower is one of the trademarks of Belgrade, which passengers first see on arrival in the capital of Serbia. At the summit of Avala in 1938, a representative monument to the Unknown Hero was erected. The project for the monument was made by sculptor Ivan Mestrovic, in the form of a mausoleum with caries, which represent women in traditional costumes from all the Yugoslavian regions. Serbia is different from all the countries of the First World War in that all other countries have monuments to the Unknown soldier, and only Serbia to the Unknown Hero.
